30年以上前、テレビからふと流れてきたナレーターの声がありました。 「ニューヨークに、万華鏡だけを扱うお店がある―」

その一言が、1994年、日本初の万華鏡専門店「カレイドスコープ昔館」が誕生する原点となりました。

当時の日本において、万華鏡はまだ「子供の玩具」という認識が一般的でした。
しかし、昔館の開店を機に、それは大人の想像力を刺激する「アート作品」として再評価され始めたのです。

19世紀初頭のイギリスで産声を上げ、20世紀のアメリカで飛躍的な発展を遂げた万華鏡文化。
この素晴らしい文化を日本に紹介できたのは、私の友人たちや、アメリカ万華鏡界の草分けであるコージー・ベーカー（Cozy Baker）氏をはじめ、多くの方々の支援があったからこそです。

それから30年。 今や日本各地にミュージアムが生まれ、独自の感性を持つ日本人作家も数多く育ちました。
アメリカのショップに彼らの作品が並ぶ光景を目にするにつれ、万華鏡という文化がこの地に深く根を張ったことを、感慨深く感じております。

昔館はこれからも、国内外の優れた作品の紹介はもちろん、多岐にわたるコラボレーションを通じ、私たちが厳選した「昔館ならではのセレクション」で万華鏡の魅力をお届けしてまいります。

Over thirty years ago, I happened to hear a television narrator say: "There is a shop in New York that specializes in kaleidoscopes."

That single moment led to the founding of Kaleidoscope Mukashi-Kan in 1994 — Japan's very first kaleidoscope specialty store. At the time, kaleidoscopes were widely regarded as little more than simple toys for children. The opening of Mukashi-Kan marked a turning point, and kaleidoscopes began to be rediscovered as works of art capable of engaging the adult imagination.

Born in early 19th-century Britain and flourishing remarkably in 20th-century America, this culture found its way to Japan through the generous support of Cozy Baker — a pioneering figure in the American kaleidoscope world — and many others.

Thirty years on, kaleidoscope museums have opened across Japan, and a new generation of Japanese artists has emerged with a distinctive creative voice. To see their works now carried in shops around the world, including in the United States — it is a profound reminder of how far this culture has traveled.

Mukashi-Kan will continue to introduce works by artists from Japan and abroad, and to seek out collaborations of every kind — always with the intention of offering a selection that could only come from us. We look forward to expanding what the kaleidoscope can be.
